Background + Context
We understand human sexuality is a complex and difficult topic for many, and that different religions and faith traditions have various perspectives, values and expectations for sexuality and sexual expression. Within this context, we know that each place of worship shares a common desire to uphold and ensure the health and well-being of the young people it serves, and to teach and guide them to make wise and healthy decisions. It is at this point that we the members of the WeCanStopSTDsLA Interfaith Working Group, found common ground and interests to engage in dialogue and produce the Interfaith Toolkit and accompanying Curriculum, so that we can better equip and strengthen young people for the long haul while upholding our spiritual values and practices. As faith leaders, we must understand the long term and short term impacts an STI can have on physical and emotional health and well-being. We have a great opportunity, an imperative if you will, to come alongside young people and provide critical and life-saving information.
WeCanStopSTDsLA united individuals and organizations across South Los Angeles, within Los Angeles County Supervisorial District 2, including those who live, work, serve, and worship in the community. Although federal funding ended in 2025, the initiative’s mission continues through the strong partnerships it created. The Interfaith Working Group remains active, engaging faith communities to help reduce the impact of sexually transmitted diseases and infections
Interfaith Working Group
Since 2014, the Interfaith Working Group (IFWG) has collaborated with diverse faith communities across Los Angeles to cultivate open, respectful dialogue around sexual and reproductive health. This work grew out of the Circle of Faith initiative (2016–2017), which equipped faith leaders, youth, and families with essential education on the STI epidemic and highlighted the vital role faith communities play in supporting the health and well‑being of young people.
Following the initiative, 65.6% of participating faith leaders expressed a need for more sexual and reproductive health resources within their congregations. In response, Coachman Moore & Associates, Inc. (CMA), serving as the backbone team for WeCanStopSTDsLA on behalf of the Interfaith Working Group, partnered with experts in sexual health education and faith‑based programming to develop a comprehensive Curriculum and Toolkit over a three‑year period.
IFWG’s work was recognized nationally at the CDC’s virtual 2020 National Conference. Today, the group continues to create safe, meaningful spaces for tough but necessary conversations—empowering communities to guide young people toward healthy lives in mind, body, and soul, with the belief that all three must be strong.
